A molecule beside an 80 nm gold sphere (ε = −12.99 + 1.09i), 650 nm: excitation and quantum yield, Anger et al. 2006, Fig. 1a Anger, Bharadwaj & Novotny, Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 113002 (2006): the excitation rate grows toward the gold and the quantum yield falls (quenching); values read off Fig. 1a to ±5%, from crosscheck/classics/anger_2006.py.

Fluorescence beside gold spheres of 20, 60, 80 and 100 nm, 650 nm: Anger et al. 2006, Fig. 1b The product of excitation and quantum yield peaks near 10 nm: enhancement turns into quenching. The paper prints the maxima of all four sizes (5.3, 3.5, 2.3, 1.05 from the largest; PyStratify 5.27, 3.52, 2.20, 1.04) but the position only for 80 nm, so that is the point marked.
